Real answers about Frenchies Keto NZ products — made in Canterbury, stocked across New Zealand, and crafted by a classically trained French chef.
About Frenchies
What is Frenchies Keto NZ?
Frenchies Keto NZ is a Canterbury-based, small-batch food brand founded in 2019 by Paul Ouakli — a classically trained French chef with fine dining experience in Paris, London, and Christchurch. Every product is made in New Zealand and formulated to be sugar-free and low-carb, so people living a ketogenic or low-sugar lifestyle can enjoy real flavour without compromise. The range covers sauces, syrups, salad dressings, jams and spreads, and dry baking mixes.
Who makes Frenchies products?
Paul Ouakli is the founder, head chef, and hands-on operator. Trained in classical French cuisine, Paul applies proper chef technique to every recipe — which is why Frenchies sauces and syrups taste like the real thing rather than a diet substitute. Production is small-batch and based at the Frenchies kitchen in Rangiora, North Canterbury.
What products does Frenchies make?
The full range includes:
- Sauces — Keto Sweet Chili Sauce, Keto Ketchup, and more
- Syrups — sugar-free flavoured syrups for coffee, baking, and cocktails
- Salad Dressings — low-carb dressings for everyday use
- Jams & Spreads — sugar-free fruit jams and flavoured spreads
- Dry Baking Mixes — Keto Paleo Bread Mix, Keto Pizza Dough Mix, and specialty baking mixes
All products are shelf-stable and made in New Zealand.
Ingredients & Nutrition
What sweeteners does Frenchies use?
Frenchies uses a selection of non-nutritive and low-glycaemic sweeteners depending on the product — including erythritol, stevia, and sucralose. These are chosen specifically because they deliver sweetness without spiking blood sugar and without the bitter aftertaste common in cheaper sugar-free products. The exact sweetener blend varies per product, so check the ingredient panel on each label for specifics.
Are Frenchies products truly keto?
Yes. Every Frenchies product is formulated to be low in digestible (net) carbohydrates and completely free from added table sugar. They are designed to fit within a ketogenic macronutrient framework. Net carbs are calculated by subtracting fibre and non-impact sugar alcohols such as erythritol from total carbohydrates. Always check the nutrition panel on the specific product, as net carb counts vary across the range.
How do I calculate net carbs?
The standard approach: Net carbs = Total carbohydrates − Dietary fibre − Non-impact sugar alcohols (e.g. erythritol). Erythritol is generally considered to have zero glycaemic impact and is excluded from net carb calculations by most keto practitioners. If a Frenchies label lists a net carb figure, use that number. When in doubt, consult the full nutrition panel and ingredient list, or reach out to us directly at info@frenchies.nz.
Will Frenchies products affect my blood sugar?
The sweeteners used in Frenchies products — erythritol, stevia, Sucralose, and Sucaryl — have minimal to zero glycaemic impact for most people and are widely used by the low-carb and diabetic communities. That said, individual blood glucose responses can vary. If you have diabetes or insulin resistance, we recommend monitoring your own response and consulting your healthcare professional before making significant dietary changes.
Are Frenchies products calorie-free?
Not all of them. Sauces and syrups that are primarily water-based and sweetened with zero-calorie sweeteners will be very low in calories. Baking mixes, jams, spreads, and dressings that contain almond flour, coconut flour, cream cheese, butter, or oils will contribute meaningful calories — which is expected and appropriate on a ketogenic diet where fat is a primary energy source. Always check the nutrition panel for per-serving calorie information.
Are Frenchies products gluten-free?
Many Frenchies products are gluten-free by formulation — particularly the sauces, syrups, dressings, and jams which are made without wheat or grain-based ingredients. The dry baking mixes use alternative flours (almond, coconut) rather than wheat flour, making them suitable for most gluten-sensitive individuals. However, always check individual product labels for specific gluten declarations and cross-contamination statements, as manufacturing environments may handle a range of ingredients.
Are they safe for children, pregnant, or breastfeeding people?
The ingredients used in Frenchies products are approved under New Zealand food safety standards. However, concentrated sugar substitutes are generally not specifically tested on children, and nutritional needs during pregnancy and breastfeeding are different. We recommend consulting your doctor or midwife before regularly using these products if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or feeding them to young children.
Allergens & Food Safety
Are there allergens I should know about?
Some Frenchies products — particularly the baking mixes, spreads, and certain sauces — contain tree nuts (almond flour), dairy (cream cheese, butter), and eggs. The dry baking mixes for Keto Paleo Bread and Keto Pizza Dough are nut-based. Always read the full ingredient and allergen declaration on each product’s label. If you have a severe allergy and need manufacturing cross-contamination information, contact us directly at info@frenchies.nz before purchasing.
Are Frenchies products NZ food safety compliant?
Yes. All Frenchies Keto NZ products are manufactured in compliance with New Zealand food safety regulations under the Food Act 2014 and the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. All products are shelf-stable, correctly labelled, and produced in a registered food manufacturing environment in Canterbury, New Zealand.
